The K index ... is an indication of potential instability in the lower half of the atmosphere, availability of moisture in the boundary layer, and reduction of buoyancy through entrainment of dry air (near 700 mb). It is most usefull for forecasting thunderstorms in the absence of strong, lager-scale forcing.
