The MASS model is currently being executed in multiple cycles on a daily basis. There are currently four cycles. The first cycle of the UTC day begin execution at 9 PM EST (0200 UTC). This cycle uses the 12-hour forecast from the 12 UTC run of the National Weather Services Eta model as a first guess for the initialization analysis. The 00 UTC rawinsonde and surface data is used to update the first guess. The lateral boundary conditions are extracted from the same 12 UTC Eta run. This cycle is run for 36 hours and, thus, the boundary conditions use the data from the 12 to 48-hour Eta 12 UTC forecast. A higher resolution nested simulation is not executed in this cycle. The second cycle of the day is the final 00 UTC run. The first guess for the initialization of this run is from the 00 UTC run of the Eta model and lateral boundary conditions are taken from the same run. Thus, the first guess and lateral boundary conditions are 12 hours newer than those used in the "early" run. |
