Job Title: Unix-Linux System Administrator for Small Meteorological Business

We specialize in the development and application of atmospheric and other environmentally related models to solve problems for a variety of industries. These models are used for a wide range of research and real-time operational purposes, to include applications in wind energy planning, agriculture operations and homeland defense. Products generated by our models are used to solve a variety of problems that require solutions that require both climatological information and weather forecasts.

Location: MESO, Inc is located in the Rensselaer Technology Park (http://www.rpitechpark.com/) which in the heart of New York's Tech Valley. The Technology Park is located just on the east side of the Hudson river across from Albany and south of the city Troy, NY in what is called New York's Capital Region. We are in close proximity to research institutions such as the University at Albany, the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. New York City, Boston, and Montreal are all within a three-hour drive. The capital region is also close to many recreational regions including the Adironadack State park about an hours drive to the north and the Catskill mountains about an hour to the south.

General Job Description: MESO Inc has an immediate opening for a qualified person to be the computer system administrator. The system administrator needs at least 2 years experience and be familiar with all aspects of Unix - Red Hat Linux system administration and networking. Will be responsible for maintaining MESO's local area network, which includes Linux, Unix, Windows and Macintosh OS. Assesses all computer security requirements and sets up secure networks to meet those requirements. Other duties will include maintaining dynamic on-line websites and web applications written in PHP and Perl that interface with large dynamic databases.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain Red Hat/CentOS environment
  • Work with and maintain Linux and Unix based operating systems.
  • Maintain current running services apache/dns/postfix and ftp
  • Troubleshoot network/software and hardware problems - on a 24/7 pager basis
  • Work with and manage 100+ Red Hat/Digital UNIX servers, 4 Windows XP and 3 MAC desktops
  • Setup, installation upgrading of servers, networking equipment, UPS's, and terminal servers
  • Maintain backup procedures and a backup server for mission critical products
  • Assess all computer security requirements and set up secure networks to meet requirements
  • Implement and maintain security policies
  • Develop and set up dynamic websites that interface with large databases
  • Use PHP/mysql website to store server data, server logs and sharing of information within MESO.
  • Manage MESO's web based on-line management information system (MIS)
  • Responsible for identifying the need for and acquiring new computer systems

Must Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in System Administration or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills.
  • Experience with large numbers of Linux servers in a data center environment
  • Good understanding of networking concepts.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP protocols.
  • Proven experience in scripting skills in shell and perl.
  • Experience with NFS on Linux .
  • Knowledge and ability to troubleshoot hardware/software problems quickly
  • Familiarity with fault analysis, performance tuning, and advance troubleshooting of Red Hat/CentOS
  • Experience with DHCP, DNS, Postfix, Apache, Mysql and other infrastructure technologies
  • Knowledge of PHP to support a web management tool
  • Extensive knowledge perl/python/bash scripting
  • Knowledge of openssh in dealing with ssh hostkeys
  • Implement and maintain security policies

Desired:

  • Experience with the ingestion of NOAAport data and/or satellite data transmissions
  • Redhat kickstart experience
  • mpich2 experience for a clustering environment
  • Should have good understanding of Unix/ *Linux* performance tuning concepts.
  • Strong knowledge of apt-get and/or yum for Red Hat/CentOS
  • Cisco routers and firewall rules
  • Interests in applications related to meteorology
